As leaders it will be important for us to have a good definition of success that you can use as a measure for your activities through out the year.
I personally like Coach Wooden's definition on page 10: "Making the complete effort to maximize your abilities, skills, and potential in whatever circumstances - good or bad - may exist"
In the next paragraph he separates this definition of success from our present cultures definition: "Sometimes the competition you face will be bigger or stronger, more experienced or better [equipped]. Regardless of the situation you face as a leader, you must believe and teach those under your leadership that success is theirs when together you summon the will to put forth EVERYTHING you have."
So at the end of the day can you win a match and be unsuccessful? Can you lose a match and come away with your head held high? The answer to both ought to be yes if your goal is giving everything you're involved in your very best effort...
Commit to excellence. Be successful.

Coach Wooden came up with the idea of the pyramid of success and one of the foundations is "friendship as it pertains to leadership." "Camaraderie is a spirit of goodwill that exists between individuals and members of a group--comrades-in-arms." succes isn't just the number of wins but the improvement and how a team works together. Eventhough we didn't have a winning season this year, we surpassed team goals and expectations. Several players scored more than 5 goals, our keeper had numerous shutouts, and we kept a full jv team. There wasn't drama and the team worked great together showing that success isn't measured in just the number of wins.
ReplyDeleteFriendship was one of the foundations of the pyramid of success that Coach Wooden came up with. It stood out to me because this year was my first year playing soccer and I made many friends. Many of them had been playing for many years. I already looked up to them and if I didn't know how to do something, I would ask for help and they would help me, especially on the field. Since they also teated me as a friend and with respect, it made respecting them much easier than it already was. If they hadn't, I don't think that I would have enjoyed soccer as much as I did.
